Author Guidelines—Manuscripts (CE)

Dental Learning welcomes original, unpublished article submissions on general dentistry and dental hygiene, endodontics, periodontics, oral health, dental disease prevention, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, esthetic and restorative dentistry, oral pathology, orthodontics, pain control, and practice management topics. Other dental topics will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The emphasis is on clinical techniques for the general dentist and dental hygienist and practical, up-to-date review articles. Articles must present a balanced view of therapeutic options, using generic names whenever possible and avoid promoting commercial products or services. Please follow the ADA/CERP Guidelines for fairplay.

Manuscript Review: All articles are peer-reviewed by members of the CE Advisory Board, the Advisory Board Chairman, and the CE Director. The Advisory Board Chairman and the publisher reserve the right to make revisions in the text where appropriate. If questions arise, the author will be contacted for clarification. Authors are responsible for meeting advisory board requirements for final approval and publication of manuscripts.

Manuscript Format: Articles should be 8 to 10 double-spaced pages, in 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins, and should include: (1) a 10-question, multiple choice CE quiz; (2) 3 to 4 Learning Outcomes; (3) a 1-paragraph (100 word max) abstract; (4) figure captions corresponding to up to 20 photos/figures; (5) references, tables, and other additional material; (6) information about author(s) including name, credentials, position or title, school and organization affiliations, address, phone number, and email address. Manuscripts should be submitted via e-mail.

Learning Outcomes: All manuscripts must include 3 to 4 Learning Outcomes that identify what readers will learn from the article. State each objective in terms that clarify its clinical relevance. They should appear before the abstract in this format:

After reading this article, the reader should be able to:
explain proper digital x-ray sensor placement techniques for capturing bitewing and periapical images.
describe recent advances in digital radiography technology and their impact on diagnostic image quality.
discuss the hardware and software requirements for converting a general practice from film-based diagnostic imaging to digital radiography.

CE Quiz: All manuscripts should include a CE quiz consisting of 10 multiple choice questions that reinforce the learning objectives. Four possible answers should be supplied, with the correct answer noted. The correct answer must be located within the article. No true/false questions.

Example:
1. Which of the following was a component of the microabrasive slurry used in treating the case study patient?
a. 18% hydrochloric acid
b. 6.6% hydrochloric acid
c. 37% phosphoric acid
d. 12% phosphoric acid (correct answer: b)

References: References must appear in the text as numbered superscripts (not footnotes) and listed at the end of the manuscript in the order in which they appear in the text. Generally, the majority of references should be less than 10 years old. Authors must provide complete bibliographic
information for all materials cited. Journal references must include author(s), journal (using National Library of Medicine abbreviations only), volume numbers, inclusive page numbers, and date of publication.
