Educating Patients About Link Between Diabetes and Oral Health

Recently, I practiced clinical hygiene in a periodontal practice, and I worked with a patient who has Type 2 diabetes. I asked her how her mouth had been feeling, what her most recent blood/sugar reading was that day, and whether she knew her latest Hb1Ac score. She looked at me and said, "Is there really a connection with all of that?"

What I discovered that day was that many patients do not yet grasp the direct impact their diabetes control has in correlation to their oral health.

Study Shows Strong Link Between Obesity and Dental Health in Homeless Children

The ADA states that children older than 2 should brush twice a day and floss daily once their teeth start to touch.

But there are roughly 1.6 million American children who go to sleep without a home of their own each year. Without a stable home and environment, many homeless children face challenges keeping up with basic dental health habits.

The recent storm along the East Coast created extremely difficult living and working conditions for millions of Americans. Problems with electricity, heat, and water—basic necessities that are often taken for granted—leave many people struggling to get back to normalcy.

To help these affected East Coast homes and businesses get back to business as usual, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Preservation (OSAP) offer several free resources for clinicians practicing in resource-constrained settings.
