A review in The Cochrane Library found that triclosan could boost the effectiveness of toothpaste, reducing plaque, gingivitis and bleeding gums while also slightly reducing tooth decay. The toothpaste was compared to fluoride toothpastes without triclosan and copolymer, which helps the triclosan remain on the teeth and not be washed off by saliva.
