Educational Objectives

Identify and Treat Patient Sleep Apnea

  • Understand epidemiology, and the costs and risks of untreated sleep apnea
  • Review efficacy data and positive health outcomes with use of oral appliances for treatment of OSA
  • Identify common barriers that dentist and physicians face when working together and prevent increased prescriptions of oral appliances
  • Learn how to work more closely with physicians and overcome barriers to effective collaboration

Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea is a highly prevalent disorder with significant adverse health impacts when left untreated. Dentists and physicians are in a position to identify and treat patients. Physicians have been historically resistant to prescribing dental devices despite evidence of efficacy and positive health outcomes with oral appliance treatment. This presentation aims to highlight some of the barriers to dentist and physician collaboration in the management of obstructive sleep apnea and ideas on how to overcome them.
