Bonded for Success: Predictable Adhesive Protocols for Direct & Indirect Restorations – A BISCO Webinar Recap

BISCO’s webinar, Bonded for Success: Predictable Adhesive Protocols for Direct & Indirect Restorations, presented by Dr. Devin McClintock, explored practical strategies for achieving predictable bonding outcomes through proper isolation, material-specific preparation, and consistent clinical protocols.

Dr. McClintock owns Precision Dentistry of Williamsburg, a comprehensive restorative and cosmetic practice in Virginia. She completed advanced training in cosmetic dentistry, is a graduate of the Kois Center, a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, and a member of the AACD Board of Directors.

A major focus of the webinar was the importance of proper isolation in restorative dentistry. Dr. McClintock emphasized how rubber dam use can improve moisture control, visibility, and patient comfort while reducing the risk of contamination that can compromise bond strength.

The webinar also highlighted how different restoration types require different bonding approaches. Understanding whether a restoration relies primarily on adhesion or mechanical retention can help clinicians select appropriate techniques and establish more consistent protocols.

Through clinical cases involving direct and indirect restorations, Dr. McClintock demonstrated the value of conservative restorative approaches and careful preparation. These examples reinforced the importance of preserving natural tooth structure when possible, evaluating occlusion and tooth position, and maintaining clear communication with laboratory technicians.

Another key topic was the importance of material-specific bonding protocols. Dr. McClintock discussed how restorative materials such as zirconia and porcelain require different preparation techniques. She also emphasized the importance of understanding manufacturer-specific adhesive protocols and maintaining proper isolation and control during cementation.

Overall, the webinar reinforced that predictable bonding depends on more than the adhesive itself. By prioritizing proper isolation, thoughtful treatment planning, and consistent clinical protocols, clinicians can work toward more predictable, long-lasting restorative outcomes.
