Dr. Todd C. Snyder led BISCO's Dental Learning CE webinar, “The Mock-Up–Driven Veneer Workflow". This webinar provided clinicians with a practical, diagnosis-driven framework for achieving predictable, minimally invasive veneer outcomes rooted in enamel preservation and precise execution.
Dr. Snyder is a graduate of the UCLA School of Dentistry and co-created the first two-year graduate program in Aesthetic and Cosmetic Dentistry at UCLA. An Accredited Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, he is an internationally recognized lecturer focused on cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
Dr. Snyder reviewed evaluating tooth display at various points to establish clear restorative boundaries. A consistent reference point was the wet dry line of the lower lip. Careful analysis helps determine where to add, where to reduce, and when orthodontic movement may be indicated.
A central theme was the importance of diagnostic wax-ups and intraoral mock-ups. Rather than relying on uniform depth guidelines, Dr. Snyder advocated preparing through an approved mock-up to control reduction precisely. Mock-ups allow patients to preview proposed changes while giving clinicians a clear reduction guide. This approach supports selective preparation, meaning some teeth may require slight reduction while others can remain untouched, always with the goal of removing the least amount of tooth structure necessary.
Enamel preservation was presented as essential for long-term success. Evidence shows higher survival rates and stronger bonds when veneers are bonded predominantly to enamel rather than dentin. Unnecessary dentin exposure increases the risk of bond degradation and failure. By following a mock-up driven workflow, clinicians can remain in enamel whenever possible and improve restoration longevity.
Dr. Snyder also addressed common errors such as over-preparing teeth or placing bulky additives. He reinforced that minimally invasive dentistry requires thoughtful planning and disciplined cementation protocols to ensure marginal integrity and accurate shade outcomes.
