Educational Objectives
After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:
• Describe the history and composition of amalgam and reasons why it is loved and hated.
• Discuss the Minamata Convention on Mercury and what it means for dentistry.
• Recognize amalgam regulations, equipment and management and how it affects you and your practice.
Abstract
Amalgam has long been a standard dental material for direct restorative purposes. Its use has long had its champions and opponents.
Over the years the movement for the elimination of amalgam use in our profession has grown and as such, the percentage utilization has steadily decreased. To protect our environment, regulations have been implemented to “control” the amalgam waste created in our offices and eliminated into our water systems, landfills and incinerators. Are you aware of them? Are you prepared to comply?
This webinar will review the long history of amalgam use, the “controversy” this material has undergone, the movement to eliminate it from use, and the steps you need to implement to stay in compliance and “protect the environment”.
