Educational Objectives
After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Understand the difference between addiction, physical dependance, and tolerance.
- Identify the 5 Cs of addiction.
- Learn how to evaluate pharmacodynamic tolerance.
- Discuss the methods of drug misuse and abuse.
- Review the biopsychosocial framework for investigating pain.
- Identify the prescription drugs with abuse potential.
- Learn to identify drug use patterns in patient assessment.
- Discuss additional substance abuse, including alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis.
- Understand the “why” of prescription drug abuse.
Abstract
In a society where substance abuse and addiction are prevalent, it’s vital for dental professionals to enhance their understanding of effective and safe pain management. By understanding the associated terms, doctors will be better able to interpret federal regulations and scientific literature, which are not always accurate or clear.
With more than 30 years of experience in clinical medicine, board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. John Hexem will help course participants feel more confident in prescribing opioids for appropriate pain management without contributing to the problem of drug addiction.

Author Bio
John Hexem, PhD, MD
John Hexem, PhD, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist whose distinguished career includes serving on a nationally renowned liver transplant team.
Dr. Hexem earned BS and MS degrees in Chemistry from Yale University. Following the completion of an MD degree from the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Hexem attained a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also performed his residency in anesthesia. Dr. Hexem was also awarded fellowships in Chemistry and Anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania
