Abstract
Routine prophylaxis with hand and power instruments has long been the standard for maintaining oral and systemic health. The endpoint of this and other non-surgical procedures, however, has shifted to minimize tooth substance loss during instrumentation and empower patients to take ownership of their homecare. As concerns for peri-implant disease also rise, newer techniques must be introduced to prevent damage to the implant surface and the destructive sequalae of titanium ion and particle release into the surrounding tissues. Guided biofilm therapy (GBT) provides a gentle and effective way to preserve healthy teeth, orthodontic appliances, and implant restorations with patient-friendly materials and precision technology. Patients can see an improvement in their oral health in real time with an emphasis on dental hygiene motivation and education as part of treatment. Implementing this protocol will improve the patient experience and re-excite the entire clinical team in their management of the dental biofilm. GBT further creates immediate value and synergy in the dentist-hygienist relationship.
