Abstract
Older adults residing in long-term care facilities experience an increased risk of oral health issues, which can greatly impact their overall well-being. The five most prevalent oral health conditions within this demographic include periodontal disease, dental caries, dry mouth (xerostomia), oral candidiasis, and ill-fitting dentures. These challenges are often compounded by age-related conditions such as dementia, physical disabilities, and the inability to maintain routine oral hygiene independently.
This webinar will examine innovative strategies for improving oral health outcomes in long-term care settings. Mobile and pop-up dentistry models have emerged as effective solutions to provide comprehensive dental care directly to residents, addressing challenges related to immobility and access. Furthermore, the session will share best practices for treating individuals with dementia, those in hospice care, patients who are unconscious, and residents who are wheelchair-bound or bed-bound. Techniques will include establishing trust, adapting treatment protocols for comfort, and utilizing specialized tools to ensure effective and compassionate care.
