Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, the oral healthcare provider will be able to:

  • Describe antimicrobial/microbicidal ingredients in surface disinfectants.
  • Describe the EPA-regulated chemical disinfectants.
  • Describe the advantages of each chemical ingredient.
  • Describe the appropriate dental environmental surface cleaning and disinfection selection criteria.

Abstract

Disinfection of environmental surfaces in the dental office is essential for interrupting the cycle of what epidemiologists call the chain of infection to prevent the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to patients and healthcare providers. Recommendations and regulations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for appropriate cleaning and disinfecting practices must be in place to reduce pathogenic contamination and ensure the health of dental professionals and patients. The chemical disinfectants used within the dental office contain components registered and regulated as antimicrobials effective against common pathogens. Proper knowledge of these components and compliance with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, CDC work practice controls, and manufacturer’s instruction for use (MIFU) must be followed. This article will discuss chemical composition and information on the proper use of surface disinfectants.
