Endodontic Considerations for Dental Trauma & Avulsions
Educational Objectives
After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Share how to utilize the dental trauma guidelines.
- Describe the recommended emergency treatment of the most common dental injuries.
- Explain the importance and need for follow-up.
- Outline possible endodontic complications following dental trauma and their management.
- Explain the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the treatment of TDIs, especially if complications present.
- Review the benefits of CBCT regarding these cases (over conventional dental imaging).
Abstract
The management of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) can be clinically challenging for the dentist, patients, and their families. Management and treatment of TDI can be complex, time-consuming, and expensive and can often require multidisciplinary collaboration.
Traumatic dental injuries can be impactful with adverse consequences if mismanaged. While most TDIs have an excellent prognosis, more serious TDIs, such as luxations and avulsions, have an elevated risk of adverse sequelae, such as root resorption or ankylosis. Untreated, ankylotic teeth may end up in severe infraposition, compromising neighboring teeth and vertical growth of the alveolar process. Infection-related resorption may also lead to loss of previously traumatized teeth. In growing individuals, these adverse results can have a life-long impact with long-term dental treatment considerations. Through a series of clinical case presentations, I will discuss how to diagnosis and manage TDI, as well as the management of TDI complications.

Author Bio
Dr. Judy McIntyre
Dr. Judy McIntyre attended the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with her DMD degree. At Harvard, she worked as an orthodontic assistant and performed research on dental unit waterline biofilms.
After graduation, Dr. McIntyre obtained a coveted endodontics residency position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Alongside renowned researchers in the field of endodontics, traumatology and pediatric dentistry, her thesis and research regarding traumatic dental injuries (her true passion and great interest) have been published in numerous professional journals.
Dr. McIntyre has held leadership roles within the AAE and Massachusetts Dental Society and lectures nationally on endodontics, dental trauma, and pediatric care.
