Abstract

Family systems theory is a concept of looking at the family as a cohesive emotional unit. A family functions as a system wherein each member plays a specific role and must follow certain rules. Many dental practices function similarly, with both functional and dysfunctional systems. A change in one person sparks a change in others. Functional infection protection systems are required as a shared family responsibility with each individual trained and ready when needed.

Author Bio

Patti DiGangi

Patti DiGangi believes dentistry is no longer just about fixing teeth; dentistry is oral medicine, AND its time we got around to truly practicing it. Her new brand: Beyond Oral Health, challenges us do so. We can have a world with no oral cancer, and not just manage, but cure, periodontal disease. We can also have a caries-free world; but not by doing more of the same. Patti’s specialty is medically necessary coding. Her efforts have assisted thousands of professionals to code more accurately and efficiently. She teaches the “why” behind the codes. In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) recognized her expertise by inviting her to write a chapter in its Current Dental Ter¬minology (CDT) 2017 Companion book and again for CDT 2018 Companion. Patti holds publishing and speaking licenses with the ADA for CDT 2020. As someone with multiple allergies, infection prevention is very important to her.
