Recent Innovations in Single-File Reciprocation Technique
Educational Objectives
After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe advantages and disadvantages of rotary and reciprocating motions.
- Identify the clinical advantages of heat treatment for reciprocating files.
- Explain the differences between commercially available reciprocating instruments in terms of design and performance.
- Describe the operative techniques for treatment and retreatment, and the clinical alternatives, such as a more minimally invasive approach.
Abstract
Single-file reciprocation technique was commercialized a decade ago to provide the most simple and rapid NiTi instrumentation technique. A new safer motion and new instruments were released, but the technique, even if very promising, did not replace conventional rotary instrumentation. This was mainly due to inadequate clinical performance of the available NiTi instruments, because one single instrument had to reach working length and was consequently subjected to all the intracanal mechanical stress as well as more risk of iatrogenic errors. In the past few years, however, new instruments with innovative heat treatments have been commercialized, and the single-file technique is regaining popularity. In the present lecture, the latest innovations in terms of motions, instruments, and operative procedures will be explained to identify a predictable, efficient, and safe single file reciprocation technique ideal for everyday endodontic treatments.

Dr. Gianluca Gambarini is the author of more than 500 scientific articles. He has lectured all over the world with more than 600 presentations as a main speaker in the most important international congresses and many universities worldwide. During his academic career he gained many awards and recognition, and was responsible for many scientific projects with national and international grants.
Dr. Gambarini has focused his interests on endodontic materials and clinical endodontics. He is also actively cooperating as a consultant to develop new technologies, operative procedures, and materials for root canal treatment. He has many patents concerning endodontic technologies.
He is currently president elect of the European Society of Endodontology.
He still maintains a private practice limited to endodontics in Rome, Italy.
