Mitigation Strategies for the Prevention of COVID-19 in Dentistry

After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Recognize transmission routes of airborne transmitted diseases.
- Identify aerosol generating procedures in the dental setting.
- Analyze mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of transmission of airborne pathogens in dentistry.
Abstract
While COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly through close contact from person to person via respiratory droplets, SARS-CoV-2 may also be spread via airborne transmission including aerosols. Aerosols are microscopic droplets that remain floating in the air for minutes to hours, and are generated when an infected person breathes, speaks, coughs or sneezes. They may also be generated during dental procedures. This webinar will discuss the current science and understanding of the transmission of COVID-19, the role of aerosols in disease transmission, and mitigation strategies to help ensure a safe dental visit for patients and dental personnel.

Marie T. Fluent, DDS, CDIPC, FACD
Dr. Marie Fluent is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Her dental career spans over 35 years and involves lecturing, writing, and consulting on infection control related topics including antibiotic stewardship and dental unit waterlines. Dr Fluent is a member of the Michigan Dental association, American Dental Association, and holds Fellowship in the American College of Dentistry. She is a recipient of the Association for Dental Safety Milton Schaefer and Service Leadership Awards. Dr. Fluent is passionate and deeply committed to improving the safety of dental visits and has educated thousands of dental professionals and students nationally and internationally.
