Abstract

This article reviews the history of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation, abbreviated to nitrous oxide or laughing gas analgesia, and brings the technology and techniques up to the current day. Nitrous oxide analgesia or N2O/O2 is considered a cornerstone in many successful dental practices treating patients with anxiety. This article reviews indications, contraindications, benefits, limitations, and many clinical suggestions. Long-term seasoned users of this clinical adjunct will find something useful to incorporate into their practice to benefit them and their patients.

Harvey Levy, DMD, MAGD, FACD, FICD

Dr. Harvey Levy practices general and hospital dentistry in Frederick, MD, where he emphasizes comprehensive dental care for individuals with anxiety or special needs. He graduated from Tufts Dental in 1974, GPR at Eastman Dental Center in 1976, taught full time at U Penn GPR, and is on Dean’s faculty at U MD Dental School. He has treated 2,200 patients who were asleep in the OR at Frederick Health Hospital and Hagerstown’s Meritus Medical Center, and now also Kernan Hospital in Baltimore and Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville, MD. He has administered or supervised 40,000 oral-sedation patient visits in his office. He is ACLS certified, holds a Class I sedation permit, and has been a BCLS instructor-trainer for the American Heart Association. Dr. Levy has earned a Mastership and six Lifelong Learning Service Recognitions from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), along with nine fellowships, five Diplomate certificates, and board certification in Integrative Medicine. He is the recipient of the ADA Access to Care Award, the AGD Humanitarian Award, MD Governor’s Doctor of the Year Award, Special Care Dentistry’s Saul Kamen Award, Special Care Dentistry’s Harold Berk Award, Tufts University Distinguished Alumni Award, Maryland State Dental Association Inaugural Humanitarian Award, Morgan State Public Health Award, and the privilege of running the 2002 Olympic Torch honoring Maryland patients with special needs. Dr. Levy has authored 40 dental publications and has presented over 150 lectures and workshops on treating patients with anxiety or special needs. He is also a martial arts master holding 16 black belts, and is a three-time inductee into the US Martial Arts Hall of Fame.
