Abstract
This course on child abuse and maltreatment provides an indepth guide for dental professionals, including dentists, hygienists, and assistants. This course aims to educate on the identification, reporting, and prevention of child abuse. It covers definitions and scope according to international, federal, and New York State laws, detailing various forms of abuse such as physical, emotional, sexual abuse, exploitation, and neglect. The course highlights the incidence and prevalence of child abuse globally, in the U.S., and in New York State, and discusses the risk factors and impacts on children's health and well-being. It includes guidelines on recognizing physical and emotional indicators of abuse, forensic evidence collection, and the influence of implicit bias on reporting. The reporting process in New York State is outlined, emphasizing legal protections for mandated reporters and the consequences of failing to report. Preventive strategies are discussed, focusing on coordinated efforts at individual, community, and societal levels. The course also covers the Abandoned Infant Protection Act and the INSPIRE model for ending violence against children. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to define relevant terms, discuss the prevalence of child abuse, identify risk factors and indicators, understand legal reporting processes, and implement strategies to prevent abuse and support victims.

She holds a master’s degree in nursing and a doctorate in adult education, both earned at Penn State University. Dr. Avillion has extensive experience as a professional speaker, educator, and author. She has a particular interest and background in mental health nursing and related topics. These include child abuse, older adult abuse, generalized anxiety disorder, depression, addiction, and substance use disorder.
