Part 2: Contemporary dental amalgam waste management...It's not just about the amalgam separator anymore!
Educational Objectives
A case study format will provide participants with the skills to:
- Understand the stewardship of amalgam waste management to protect the aquatic environment and food chain.
- Install an amalgam separator that meets the ANSI and ISO standards of particulate matter removal efficiency that is best suited for your practice demands.
- Maintain required documentation and record keeping for the amalgam separator installation, continued inspections and maintenance, replacement, and disposal/recycling of waste.
- Implement a maintenance plan in your dental practice that will keep you in compliance with the EPA Rule 40 CFR Part 441.
Abstract
This second part of a 2-part series on amalgam waste management will dive deeper into the EPA ruling on amalgam waste management that went into effect in 2017. The dental industry continues to be the largest source of mercury discharged to publicly owned treatment works (POTW) in the U.S. with over 5 tons dumped annually. Existing dental practices had until July 2020 to implement all the new requirements mandated by the EPA Rule 40 CFR Part 441.
With so many requirements and differing products on the market, it can be difficult for the busy dental practitioner to ensure compliance with this comprehensive EPA ruling. This course will discuss the required documentation and best management practice standards that must be implemented as this ruling goes beyond the simple installation of an amalgam separator. To ensure the amalgam separator you purchase, or are currently using, is in compliance with the EPA ruling, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) requirements of an amalgam separator will be presented.

Lisa Mayo, MHA, BSDH, RDH graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from Baylor College of Dentistry and a master’s in healthcare administration from Ohio University. She serves as the academic chair of dental hygiene, dental assisting, and surgical technology at Dallas College. Lisa is also the author of Power Instrumentation for the Dental Professional, published by Jones & Bartlett in 2023.
