Bridging the Gap Between Periodontal Disease and Chronic Wounds

After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:
• Comprehend what constitute an acute versus a chronic wound
• Understand what microorganisms are found in healthy and diseased periodontal tissues and why acute modalities make a chronic problem worse
• Recognize why gram-negative obligate anaerobes are more virulent
• Modify the biofilm from ones causing disease to ones that support health
Abstract
Why has the dental profession been unable to find an answer to periodontal disease? The answers lie in the nature of the disease (biofilm) and the methods of treatments. Periodontal disease is a chronic wound being treated by acute wound modalities such as scaling and root planing and debridement. The AMA has chronic wound guidelines that apply to periodontal treatments. These are demonstrated with time/proven results.

Duane C. Keller DMD
Duane C. Keller DMD graduated from Washington University School of Dental Medicine in 1976. He maintains a successful private practice in St. Louis, MO with an emphasis on TMD patients in chronic pain. Dr. Keller is an Academy of General Dentistry Fellow, served eight years as the Chairperson for the IAO Education Committee, and currently serves as the Chief Scientific Officer for Perio Protect LLC.
