Abstract

The opioid crisis that began in the early 2000’s has resulted in a dramatic shift in the management of postoperative and chronic pain. Prior to this, opioids were routinely prescribed for patients following many dental procedures. Some of these patients became chronic users and abusers of prescription opioids, and a portion of these went on to abuse and become addicted to illicit drugs. As medical and dental professions began to realize how prevalent this problem had become, new policies and practices were developed to look for alternatives to addictive opioid pain medications and to set up programs to reduce the morbidity and mortality of opioid abuse. Dental licensing boards in most of the states in the US have now adopted requirements for opioid education as a prerequisite for license renewal. These requirements vary by state from 1 to 3 hours. This course was designed to cover all the required topics to satisfy the opioid continuing education needs of dentists to renew their state license to practice.
