Abstract
The TMJ Disorder Controversy - Cause, Effect, Diagnosis, and Treatment
There is an ongoing debate among healthcare professionals about the best methods for diagnosing, classifying, and treating TMD symptoms. According to statistics, about 12% of people have TMD, but I believe that number to be much higher. The main reason for this is that there is contention regarding treatment, efficacy, etiology, and psychological factors. There are also too many remedies that don’t lead to results at all. The truth is, most people suffering with TMD go to their doctor, then to dentist, to chiropractor, to osteopath, to massage therapist, to neurologist, and ENT, only to be given prescriptions that don’t do anything to resolve their chronic pain.
TMJ Disorder, in most cases, can be treated. Understanding etiology, causality, multi-factor influences, and past orthodontic and dental treatments, can lead to a clear diagnosis, recognition of the root cause, and an appropriate treatment plan. And 95% of these patients can be helped and treated in our dental practice provided we understand what caused their symptoms to begin and how to look for signs.
In order to solve our patients’ challenges and create an appropriate diagnosis, we first need to see the signs, understand their history, and read between the lines of what their muscles and jaw are telling us. Putting it all together in a systematic manner leads to a clear diagnosis and a proper treatment plan.
This webinar focuses on the causes of TMD, common signs and symptoms and what they mean, the imaging that is needed to confirm diagnosis, and the step-by-step treatment solutions to help TMD patients out of their chronic debilitating pain.
Part 1 of the webinar develops the skills to understand and diagnose various types of TMD challenges and understand the cause and etiology of various types of TMJ disorders. Part 2 of the webinar goes in-depth to develop the skills to design appliances to manage all types of TMD patients, and to learn to treatment plan for long-term restorative solutions to bring these patients to health.
