Oral Cancer Screening: It's More Than Grasping the Tongue

Join oral cancer coach Susan Cotten, BSDH, RDH, developer of The Cotten Method™ of Screening, for this intensive program designed to elevate and calibrate the standard of screening in dentistry. Both dental hygienists and dentists play an important role in early detection, yet there is a critical gap in screening and “what we know now” about oral and oropharyngeal cancer.
This course breaks down the components of a comprehensive visual and tactile, extraoral, and intraoral evaluation. Attendees will learn proper extraoral palpation, the importance of identifying lymphadenopathy, evaluation of the thyroid gland and the oropharynx. ADA and ADHA oral cancer policies and coding will be reviewed.
A comprehensive oral and oropharyngeal cancer screening, head and neck evaluation isn’t optional – it must be done. Let’s close the gap together, elevate the standard of care in screening, reduce liability risk, and increase early detection.

Author Bio
Susan Cotten BSDH, RDH
Susan Cotten, BSDH, RDH, has performed more than 60,000 oral cancer screenings and a nationally recognized speaker, trainer, and leader in screening and the early detection of oral cancer. She is the founder of Oral Cancer FreeTM, Oral Cancer Consulting, and Screen the ScreenerTM campaign. Susan developed The Cotten Method™ of Screening, a proven, science-based approach to a comprehensive screening, head and neck evaluation.
Through her speaking, hands-on oral cancer screening workshops, and in-person team trainings, Susan calibrates teams and dental hygiene faculty, equipping dental professionals with confidence performing a comprehensive screening and protocols to reduce their liability risk. Susan was not always confident when screening. She changed that by working with mentors - ENT Otolaryngologists, Oral Surgeons, and the late Brian Hill at the Oral Cancer Foundation.
Susan’s career includes working clinically in private practice and public health as an Integrative Dental Hygienist in medical–dental integration and serving as Dental Lead for the Alliance for HPV-Free Colorado. She has volunteered with the Denver Homeless Head and Neck Cancer Screening and Care Group and Colorado Mission of Mercy, where she served as a board member and oral cancer screening coordinator. She has led numerous free oral cancer screening events, including the Denver Broncos Health and Wellness Expo and the Rocky Mountain Dental Conference - providing free screenings for the dental community.
Susan serves on the RDH Advisory Boards for RDH Magazine and the Oral Cancer Foundation and is an instructor for the National Network of Healthcare Hygienists. She is a 2018 RDH Sunstar Award of Distinction recipient and a 1994 graduate of the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, Department of Dental Hygiene. On a personal note, she loves watching college football, walking the beaches of Hawaii, and is a former country dance competitor.
