Event Details

Modern dental materials require updated preparation designs that differ from the standardized G.V. Black principles of cavity preparation taught in many dental schools, originally designed for amalgam in 1896. In pediatric dentistry, where developing teeth have thinner enamel and larger pulp chambers, traditional sealant placement and older preparation designs can lead to premature failure, staining, leakage, and even tooth fracture.

The Clark Class I and II preparation designs emphasize gentle, caries-specific removal, selective retention, and beveling to maximize enamel rod engagement while preserving healthy structure. For Class II restorations, utilizing anatomic Bioclear matrices and wedges ensures proper contour, contact, and adaptation with minimal stress on young teeth.

In this case-based webinar, Dr. Joshua Solomon will present a minimally invasive approach to Class I and II pediatric preparations. Participants will learn how to adapt preparation shapes, instrumentation, and materials to the unique needs of children, while exploring an entirely novel set of burs designed to revolutionize fissurotomy and pediatric cavity preparation.

Learning Objectives

After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize and Classify Occlusal Groove Pathology in children using a three-tier stain–decay continuum, selecting the appropriate Calla Lilly Fissurotomy bur and conservative preparation for each category.
  • Design Preparations that Respect Pediatric Tooth Histology — reducing C-Factor stress, preserving critical enamel and dentin, and minimizing risk to the pulp in small teeth.
  • Apply a Step-by-Step Calla Lilly Preparation Protocol with resin composite selection tailored for pediatric patients, ensuring optimal seal and wear resistance.
  • Implement a Modern, Child-Friendly Sealant Approach that includes thorough but gentle cleaning, careful exploration, and conservative intervention to detect and treat early caries without unnecessary removal of healthy tooth structure.
