Educational Objectives

After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the reason for reviewing a patient’s medical history, even for simple dental procedures.
  • Know what the most common medical issues are that will be seen in our patients.
  • Appreciate the many medications our patients may be taking and how this can affect our choice of antibiotics, pain medications, and other drugs.
  • Know what precautions and treatment alterations should be taken to minimize the risk of medical emergencies and untoward outcomes in our patients.
  • Effectively communicate with a patient’s physician regarding modifications they recommend for their dental care.

Abstract

Medical emergencies in the dental office can many times be avoided by a review of a patient’s medical history, medications, and allergies. Cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, and autoimmune diseases put our patients at increased risk, and the medications they may be taking for these problems can interact with those that we prescribe or affect our treatment decisions.

Course Outline

  • Overall patient assessment
  • Review of cardiovascular diseases and treatments
  • Review of pulmonary disease and the medications used for treatment
  • Discussion of the most common autoimmune disorders and how they impact dental treatment
  • Frequently seen metabolic disorders and their effect on dental procedures
